# what is .\*^/yiume\\^\*.

leveraging decentralised tech to revolutionize the way we approach fashion

yiume is a decentralised fashion marketplace, where instead of buying finished clothing, you buy clothing designs as nfts directly from their creators.

```
clothing = redeem(design)
```

you can redeem these designs nfts for the actual physical garment: it contains all the metadata needed for production of the clothing, so any manufacturer in the world should be able to handle it.

### no middle-man

such approach will remove the middle man between the designers and the users, effectively leveling the playing field for all fashion creators where only the quality of designs matters for  success.&#x20;

### full ownership

moreover, yiume's model will provide users with full ownership over their clothing, enabling them to choose who and how manufactures their irl garments, as well as making it possible to financially leverage their wardrobe.

### global on-demand production

finally, yiume's marketplace will initiate the adoption of the global *on-demand* production model proposed by u&#x73;*,* eliminating garment surplus and waste. since users choose their manufacturers, fair-trade and sustainable production will be made accessible to everyone.

thus, yiume marketplace seeks to use decentralized tech to achieve a vision of a free and fair fashion industry

welcome to the family!++

# why is fast fashion ngmi

understanding the problem, and how yiume is going to solve it

### waste

today's dominant fashion model creates a considerable amount of waste in materials, energy, time, money, labour and land, resulting in negative consequences on the environment and our lives. this waste is caused by two elements:

**A) production in advance**

clothing companies estimate the amount of clothes that will be purchased, each time resulting in unsold stock. since recycling is expensive, the majority of these unsold clothes get burned [\[1\]](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-44968561).

**B) low quality materials**

brands obtain revenue from their clothes only once, at the moment of purchase. accordingly, they’re incentivized to increase the frequency of transactions, which they achieve by producing low quality, quickly degradable garments. on top resulting in frequent disposal of clothes, only 12% of these are being recycled: at any given second, an equivalent of a rubbish truck full of clothes ends up in a landfill [\[2\]](https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20200710-why-clothes-are-so-hard-to-recycle).

### human right's violations

seeking to minimize costs of production, fast fashion firms outsource production into 3rd world countries, where corrupt institutions let them abuse workers with below minimum living wage salaries [\[3\]](https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2021/jul/29/the-truth-about-fast-fashion-can-you-tell-how-ethical-your-clothing-is-by-its-price) and terrible working conditions [\[4\]](https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2018/jun/05/female-garment-workers-gap-hm-south-asia). the entire fashion industry is built upon the mass exploitation of those who work within its supply chains.

### unhealthy industry standards

market-dominating firms drive the prices down to a point where competing is only possible if one would adopt their unethical and unsustainable practices. this has multiple negative consequences:

**A) suppressing independent creators**

no matter how good the designs are, independent creators can't compete due to a lack of resources, as compared to industry leaders. to create a clothing brand, on top of creating the designs one has also to take care of manufacturing, logistics, upfront capital, advertising, hosting a website… all hindering their potential contribution to the fashion world.

**B) limited design choice for consumers**

by suppressing the possibility of competition, fast fashion companies are robbing the world of a significant quantity of clothing designs and ideas. moreover, the effect is multiplied by the fact that the size of a company is inversely correlated with innovation and risk-taking, thus leading to duller, unrevolutionary creations.

**C) users have no power**

consumers keep participating in fast fashion because there aren't many viable alternatives available. this leads to users deflecting any responsibility, and forces them to continue interacting with these unethical and unsustainable companies.&#x20;

now you are given an alternative: the yiume marketplace.

# yiume != tradFashion

the comparison between yiume's approach and traditional fashion:

#### traditional fashion

* you buy and own a single physical copy of clothing
* no option of choosing the manufacturer
* no control over materials used
* fashion company has all the decisive power
* clothing is a liability, cannot be financially leveraged (in most cases)
* lack of transparency

<figure><img src="https://3244797135-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F1WmNHGtqVIlzK37xaDp6%2Fuploads%2FiU8MhoNDar5dvyRTn9rN%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=3b213111-d6dd-433b-bbe7-7f5790eb282b" alt=""><figcaption><p>traditional fashion approach</p></figcaption></figure>

**yiume approach**

* you buy and own *the design* of a clothing
* you choose your manufacturer and the manufacturing method
* you choose the material of your physical garment
* you have all the decisive power
* you can redeem (have it manufactured) your design multiple times
* your design is an asset that you can financially leverage (lend or sell, more info TBA)
* all records are transparent and permanent as they are stored on the blockchain

<figure><img src="https://3244797135-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F1WmNHGtqVIlzK37xaDp6%2Fuploads%2F0KjbvQ1HlPvvNJ94yA5B%2FlO4DpoppLQRRMSzYfkEPE.png?alt=media&amp;token=7a40028c-acdf-4ea9-a822-1475cdd113cb" alt=""><figcaption><p>yiume approach</p></figcaption></figure>

# designs

tokenised clothing

design nfts are used for redemption in order to get real life garment to you. there are multiple types of design supported at yiume:

### 3D blueprints

the nft contains information on all materials, cuts, stitches, imprinting/sewing methods, and everything else the manufacturer needs to know to create the exact irl physical version.

<figure><img src="https://3244797135-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F1WmNHGtqVIlzK37xaDp6%2Fuploads%2FC5MlyA1HlCse8YlicC6M%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=a8d2f7c5-69cd-44d2-8687-696a401edbe5" alt=""><figcaption><p><em>example of a 3D blueprint design nft</em></p></figcaption></figure>

### 2D designs

the nft is an image, logo, character, photo, drawing… you name it. the creator can recommend how they imagine it would look on a clothing, but the user can have it manufactured onto any type of clothing (pants, shirt, hoodies…), from any material (linen, cotton, blends…), positioned anywhere, alter the size and rotation, and can choose the manufacturing method (sewing, heat pressing…) - a whole new level of design ownership and garment customisation, available to everyone.

<figure><img src="https://3244797135-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F1WmNHGtqVIlzK37xaDp6%2Fuploads%2FfgBhzOIjF2mCZgHmuQcb%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=bc04fc64-4b0b-470e-b78d-2a1ba483c2c9" alt=""><figcaption><p><em>example of a 2D design nft</em></p></figcaption></figure>

# collectibles

on-chain loyalty cards

collectibles are the second type of yiume nfts. they are similar to loyalty cards that give you discounts when purchasing and redeeming designs.&#x20;

for example, with the [*(yiume.first)*](/quick-start/yiume.first) collectible, users will get a discount on all yiume native designs, as well as on all redemptions done through official yiume partnered manufacturers.

moreover, collectibles also enable an independent designer to have additional source of income and also an indicator of demand for their creations - if they sell out overnight, it might be a signal for the artist that the demand for their designs will be sky high.

# ecosystem visualisation

<figure><img src="https://3244797135-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F1WmNHGtqVIlzK37xaDp6%2Fuploads%2FnDdkrc1TXwhKQ8B7XIYy%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=0981e914-e74d-4b31-ab92-2cdca8dc1f3c" alt=""><figcaption><p>yiume ecosystem</p></figcaption></figure>

# on redemption

the most important part of the whole system is redemption. it takes place after obtaining your design and you want to get the real life clothing to you.

there are two options:

### 1. redeeming through yiume

yiume designs and yiume collaborations will be able to be redeemed right through the yiume website.

all you will need to do is:

* depending on design, input your manufacturing specifications
  * *for example, if the design you bought is a logo, you can choose on what garment it will be manufactured on (pants, shirt, hoodie...), exact model of garment (cut, material), design position and size, the assembly technique (stitching, heat transfer...)*
  * you can learn more in [designs](/ecosystem/designs)

once redeemed, you'll get an on-chain nft receipt and an email with all the delivery tracking information. finally, one morning you will wake up and a package will be waiting at your doorstep with your yiume-issued clothing inside, bearing the design you own as an nft.

another benefit of redeeming through yiume are the discounts you can get if you own certain nft collectibles issued through yiume (c.f. [collectibles](/ecosystem/collectibles)) -> [(yiume.first)](/quick-start/yiume.first)

### 2. redeeming individually

\[will be available in **phase #5** of the roadmap]

every design nft should have all the metadata necessary for production of the irl clothing. therefore, you can contact any manufacturer in the world, send them the nft, and they will produce and send you your clothing.&#x20;

however, there is an opportunity cost between decentralisation and security/quality you should definitely keep in mind.

## redemption cap

it is a necessity to introduce a redemption cap to ensure the scarcity of the real life clothes. the exact number depends on several things:

* default amount provided by the nft design
* number of eligible collectibles you own

for example, if you own a yiume design nft which you can redeem 5 times (you can use it to produce 5 identical physical garments), however, if you own certain collectibles, the number of redemptions increases to 6 or more.

## redemption process

details will be clarified soon

# customers

yiume’s approach to fashion unlocks an unprecedented level of ownership over one's clothing.&#x20;

1. **full responsibility on the manufacturing methods**
   1. you have the option to have your clothes made without exploiting and abusing workers.&#x20;
   2. you can decide on the quality of the material: you finally don't have to buy low quality clothing that wears down after a couple of months
2. **financial incentives**
   1. having an eye for hidden talent and investing in their designs early
   2. lend your designs or collectibles to other users for an interest
      1. collectibles can be rented to mass producers for them to get the benefits while you get the interest for lending
3. **permissionless decentralised marketplace**
   1. given that anyone will be able to publish their designs, the design catalogue will grow with styles all users can choose from without being limited by one brand
   2. by creating a separate marketplace for manufacturers, they are allowed to directly compete for the customer. there are multiple benefits to this:
      1. the manufacturers are incentivised to act in the most ethical and transparent approach - something that has not been achievable until now
      2. lower final price as this allows more competition worldwide

# designers

empowering creators

1. **designers can purely focus on their art**
   1. without yiume, being a designer requires:
      1. manufacturing
      2. logistics
      3. website
      4. upfront investments
      5. storage (for unsold stock)
   2. with yiume, you create a design nft and put it on-chain. that's it. this removes all the constraints and creatives can focus solely on the artistic side of things.
2. **no middle-man cuts**
   1. the goal is to have smart contract run ecosystem without any human intervention
   2. yiume team does not take a cut from designers' work
3. **secondary royalties**
   1. we firmly believe that the artists should be compensated properly for their work
   2. design nfts will collect royalties when sold on secondary markets and all proceeds will go to the creators

# manufacturers

1. **worldwide customer base**
   1. yiume ecosystem allows you to tap into a worldwide network of designers that have customers all across the globe - this provides you with an additional source of income
2. **stand out from the crowd through transparency**
   1. be rewarded for being transparent and ethical about your approaches
   2. providing evidence on blockchain is effortless and customers can easily verify this information
3. **play by your rules**
   1. set your own prices
   2. optimise for logistics
   3. pick your battles - choose which designs you want to manufacture
4. **lower waste**
   1. with yiume, you can treat design redemptions as pre-orders effectively turning the whole production on-demand
